Maggi Squire
ARTIST: MAKER-PERFORMER
My hands, mind and the moment come together, I only have a rough idea what I will do and being self absorbed, I make. Figures, dolls, puppets and masks. Holding to no specific style I start and see what happens. The material is what happens to be around me, often made up of things found, discarded, recycled, picked up. I wrap, bind, stitch and shape into a person. Fallen leaves, dried flowers, roots, weathered and bleached grass, sticks and stones and earth, threads and the fabric of life. They sometimes become amulet-like and layered in meaning. Depending on the who why or if the viewer has their own mythic view, is it; necklace, wall hanging, doll. I am interested with the complexity of life, the way each of us sees and experiences an entirely different universe even if standing next to each other, or walking along the same road we see, focus and understand our surrounding and the people-environment in our own particular way.
I make masks and costume with layers, and so intensely detailed that the working of my hands in the making forms my world and I dance, move, form, perform a way of my own talking to the universe seen unseen and beyond or so intense that I have to be in the moment.
Mistakes broken and uncertain stumbling uncertainty is why I bind and stitch and make and remake and add and do my work of art.
From large to tiny figures, some are performance, some tiny amulet-like, whatever size, always dense in intent.
I welcome you into a glimpse of my world!
